Prior and Future Programs, Speakers and Events
September 2008 - June 2009

Open to the public - Free.

Monday, September 25, 7:00 p.m.
Mr. Martin Bryan, who is currently associated with the Catamount Arts, will talk about popular songs in the “Roaring Twenties” and the many events (more than any other decade of the Twentieth Century) which were woven into its pop songs. Come and find out what the airship Shenandoah, Miami land development, and the Model A Ford all have in common. Bryan’s talk is both entertaining and instructive. This is a Vermont Humanities event sponsored by our Society.

Monday, November 27, 7:00 p.m.
Peter Mallett, is a long-time resident of Georgia, President of the Georgia Historical Society, collector of local bottles, author of Cemeteries of Georgia, The Dutcher Drug Dynasty of Saint Albans, and The Vital Records of Georgia. At our meeting, Peter will talk about his latest book, Smith’s Green Mountain Renovator and the St. Albans Remedy Company. The Renovator was a locally-concocted potion and cure-all which was produced and peddled in the St. Albans area for many years, starting in the 1870's. What did it contain, and what ailments did it cure? How much was sold, and at what price? How did it taste? We’ll find out when Peter answers these and other questions. To accompany his talk, Peter hopes to bring along Renovator artifacts which he has collected, including bottles and advertising materials.

Tuesday, December 12, 5:30 p.m.
Pot-Luck Christmas Dinner. The pot-luck dinner will be held at the Methodist Church, Swanton. Please bring a dish to share. Turkey, drinks, and rolls will be provided. Performers for the Christmas dinner will be T.W. Arrowhead Ramblers. This has always been a successful event, so save the date. RSVP 868-3567.

Saturday, February 10, 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM.
Now we have trains and a caboose (van). On Thursday, January 25, we acquired Circa 1910 Central Vermont Railway #4009 caboose and successfully moved it from Maquam Shore to the Railroad Depot Museum, thanks to a lot of help from Thomas & Barbara Sargent, Ron Charlebois, of the Charlebois Towing Co. and the Swanton Village Electric crew, under the supervision of Al Kinsinger.

Monday, February 26, 7:00 p.m.
An old-fashion winter slide show will be presented using Swanton photographs of winter activities of days gone by. Come and see the old photographs retrieved from the Society’s archives. We would love to hear your stories about past winters and share any old photographs you may have.

Monday, April 23, 7:00 p.m.
Carl Johnson, local historian and speaker, and semi-retired, longtime resident of St. Albans City will talk about the War of 1812 from a Vermonter’s perspective. Mr. Johnson enjoys reading and researching military history, and this should prove to be a very informative program.

Monday, June 22, 2009, 5:30 p.m.
Strawberries and ice cream social will be held along with the annual meeting and election of officers and trustees.

July, 2009 (date and time to be announced)                    Rededication of the historic circa-1903 West Milton Pennsylvania Truss Bridge with the Milton Historical Society and many State and Local officials in attendance.
